To achieve top four is trophy – Wenger

By Paris - 746 days ago

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has again refused to tell journalists about his future at the club, but insists that finishing top four in the Premier League is a trophy on its own.

Wenger has been in charge of Arsenal since 1997 but a section of the fans now want him to go after a string of poor results.

Wenger said on Tuesday’s press conference when a reporter demanded to know his future that, “I have answered that question many times.

“You ask again. Don’t worry, you will get that answer soon.

“Honestly, I am professional and when you are professional you perform in ideal conditions and non-ideal conditions.

“I love to win football games. I just focus on that. I work for my club with honesty and integrity.”

When asked if he sets himself targets, Wenger said, “No. I tell myself to finish as high as possible.

“We are fighting to have a positive end of season. That’s why you want the fans to stand behind the team. Let’s finish as strong as we can. Let’s show our mental resilience.”

Arsenal, will host West Ham on Wednesday in a Premier League clash, and are currently sixth in the table, seven points from Manchester City in fourth.

The last time the Gunners finished outside the top four was in the 1995/96 season and Wenger is confident his side will still claim a Champions League spot.

He added, “It’s a good challenge [reaching the top four].

“It is perfectly possible, for 20 years I have done it. I am quite pleased that people can realise it is not as easy as it looks. Like Pep Guardiola said ‘to achieve a top four in England is a trophy’.

“We have many games in April, we need to have everyone on board and to work like we did against Manchester City, then we have a chance. We also have an FA Cup semi-final, There is all to go for and it is a good opportunity to show we are united and strong.”

There have been reports that Alexis Sanchez could be leaving Arsenal but Wenger said: “He has one and a half years contract. I don’t understand that debate. Our job is to perform as long as we are here.”
